FTP Downloading Tips

When using Netscape or MS Internet Explorer to download Matchad files, it is IMPERATIVE that your system recognizes Matchcad files. If the .mcd extension isn't recognized by your system, the file will load in your browser window as ASCII text.

If you are using Netscape, do the following:

If you are getting a corrupted, unusable file as a result of trying to retrieve a file via ftp with Netscape Navigator, then you should make sure that the file's extension is listed in the "Helper Applications" section of the Netscape Preferences. The easiest way to do this is to select the "application/octet-stream" entry in the MIME Types list, then add your file's extension [in this case, mcd] to the "Extensions" field. The extensions in the list in that field should be separated by commas. The reason this is necessary is that if Netscape Navigator can't find an entry in the MIME Type table for files with the extension of the one you're trying to download, then it will download your file in "ASCII mode", whereby carriage returns and linefeeds in the file will be converted to whatever's natural for your computer system -- this is quite an unhealthy thing to do to binary files.

If you are using MS Internet Explorer, do the following:

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon.

  2. On the View menu, click Options, and then click the File Types tab.

  3. To create a new file type, click New Type. To modify the settings for an existing file type, click the type, and then click Edit.

  4. Specify a description for the file type and the filename extension associated with this type of file:
    Description of type: Mathcad
    Associated Extension: mcd
    Content type: leave this blank

  5. Click New to define an action for this file type. If you are modifying an existing type, you can click the command in the Action box that you want to modify, and then click Edit.

  6. Specify the action that you want to define, such as Open or Print, and the command that should run to complete this action.
    Action: open
Command path: enter the directory path to your Mathcad executable file (.exe).

Tips

For Help on an item, click at the top of the dialog box, and then click the item. Creating a file type is similar to associating a file in Windows version 3.1, but you can specify actions for more than just opening the file; for example, you can specify which program should be used for printing the document.
